Up to this point, UW‐Madison’s adoption of Canvas as the single, centrally supported learning management system (LMS) for face-to-face courses, as well as online and blended course delivery, has been focused on credit-based courses. Yet, the university also relies on its LMS to deliver specific noncredit courses that fit into the following categories:
- Lifelong learning (enrichment or professional training) courses for external audiences
- Employee/Staff onboarding and training courses
- Large‐scale training and compliance courses for employees
- Large‐scale compliance courses for students
While most of these courses are viable candidates for migrating to Canvas, some (for a variety of reasons) may explore other options. For example, special requirements for testing or credentialing may be handled more efficiently and effectively through another application or software, instead of Canvas.
A timeline for migrating noncredit courses in the categories previously noted is currently being finalized. Units that offer noncredit courses will be contacted in the spring and summer of 2017 to determine and schedule their transition.
All courses, including non-credit, need to be moved to Canvas by the summer of 2018.
The Division of Continuing Studies (DCS) has begun coordinating with campus-wide, lifelong-learning units to discover and document their particular business needs and possible solutions for migrating to Canvas. This effort is expected to conclude in spring 2017. If you think you should be included in this discovery process, but have yet to be contacted, please reach out to the DCS contact noted below. Even if you are only considering moving in this direction in the future, we are interested in including your future noncredit needs.
DoIT Academic Technology will begin addressing employee/staff onboarding and training courses, large-scale training and compliance courses for employees/staff, and large-scale compliance courses for students, soon. DoIT AT and DCS will share information and, where useful, focus on common solutions.
